Fabled Foxes

What is a fabled fox? In many cultures, the fox shows up in fables and other kinds of stories as a symbol of trickery or as an animal that has magic powers. On this page we will learn more about different representations of foxes from around the world.

Let’s start with kitsune, the nine-tailed fox of Japanese folklore. Foxes and human beings lived close together in ancient Japan; this companionship gave rise to legends about the creatures. The more tails a kitsune has, the older, wiser, and more powerful it is.

Next we have the atoq, the Moche fox. The Moche people of Peru believed the fox to be a warrior that would use its mind to fight. The fox would not ever use physical attack, only mental.
